William Wisden

William Wisden studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and then did his PhD with Prof. Stephen Hunt at the MRC Molecular Neurobiology Unit, Cambridge, followed by a period as postdoc (EMBO fellowship) in Prof. Peter Seeburg’s lab at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He returned to Cambridge as a group leader at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (1992 – 2001), followed by a return to Heidelberg as a PI, then to a Professorship at the University of Aberdeen, and in 2009 to a Professorship at Imperial College London. Wisden has worked extensively on neurotransmitter receptors. In collaboration with Prof. Nick Franks (also at Imperial) he has used mouse genetics to investigate sleep-wake circuitry and the actions of sedative drugs, and if good sleep diminishes the risk of dementia. Wisden is a member of the UK Dementia Research Institute.
