It was in the field of manned spaceflight that he first learned about space. He devoted the first 15 years of his career at CNES to this activity, notably on the Cassiopeia, Perseus, Andromeda and STS 111 missions. At the same time, he set up CADMOS, which is still the centre responsible for human physiology in space for the whole of Europe.
In 2008 he was appointed Deputy Director in charge of Science, Earth Observation, Telecommunications and Defence projects.
Telecommunications and Defence. In 2011, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Toulouse Space Centre, which coordinates all CNES satellite projects and techniques. At the beginning of 2016, he created the Innovation, Applications and Science Division to represent the interests, needs and challenges of all potential users of space missions and data. Lionel Suchet was appointed Deputy Director General of CNES on 28 August 2017 and since 6 January 2025 has been acting Chairman and CEO of CNES.
