Jean-François Ritz is a CNRS Research Director at the Laboratoire Géosciences Montpellier (UMR 5243 - University of Montpellier / CNRS). He is a geologist and expert in morphotectonic and paleoseismological analysis. His work focuses on the characterisation of active tectonics in intracontinental regions such as Mongolia, Siberia, Armenia, Iran, Maghreb, Bhutan, Alaska-Yukon, New Zealand and France. His research aims to detect and map active faults, determine their kinematics, average slip velocities, and the age and magnitude of past earthquakes. These data are used to model the current and recent geodynamics of the regions studied, and to assess the seismic hazard to which they are exposed.
